English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 2395 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.

Lightly crush a pound buckwheat groats and boil into firm kasha.

Fry two or three chopped onions in a third glass oil with a quarter pound boiled chopped dried porcini, then mix with kasha, pepper and dill and fill small pies.

Alternatively replace mushrooms with one and a half to two pounds finely chopped pike, zander or perch fried briefly with onions and seasoning.

Historical editorial note: The source includes the fish alternative from pie No. 2384.
Original source: Read Russian recipe No. 2395. Historical quantities and terminology are retained. See the measurements guide. Period preparation and storage methods are not modern safety guidance.
