A guide to the 22nd edition of A Gift to Young Housewives, its original Russian text, surviving scans, editorial treatment, and English presentation.

The book behind this archive

Molohovetc.ru is a digital library of Elena Ivanovna Molokhovets' Podarok molodym khozyaykam, ili Sredstva k umensheniyu raskhodov v domashnem khozyaystve (usually rendered in English as A Gift to Young Housewives, or Means of Reducing Household Expenses).

The 1901 source is the foundation of our digital presentation. Its original organization, numbered recipes, and historical wording are retained in the Russian edition; modern navigation, search, explanatory notes, and a guide to older units were added to make it easier to use.

What we preserve and what we add

  • The original: historical recipe texts, sequence, and numbering are preserved as source material.
  • Navigation: sections, related recipes, menus, and searches make the large volume browsable.
  • Explanations: unfamiliar terms, ingredients, household practices, and measures receive context.
  • Modern adaptations: any contemporary reconstruction remains a clearly separate editorial layer.
  • The English edition: English guides and contextual translations do not replace the Russian original.

How the historical text is edited

The Russian transcription preserves the historical vocabulary and formulations while normalizing some pre-revolutionary letterforms for readability: for instance, the old letter ѣ is represented as е, and pre-reform і as и. This does not turn the recipes into a modern paraphrase. We also mark missing passages rather than inventing what may once have been there.

Bibliographic details can differ slightly among surviving copies and reprints of the 22nd edition. We follow the source used for the digital text and provide external catalogues as additional reference points.

Can these recipes be cooked today?

Many can be studied and adapted, but old measures, preparation techniques, storage conditions, and heating methods require careful interpretation. Our measurement guide explains the units; contemporary food-safety guidance must take precedence over the historical instructions.
