No. 4010 — Growing Radishes at Any Season

English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 4010 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.

Soak radish seeds in water for about a day and place in a bag in sunshine or a warm spot until they begin sprouting.

Plant in a box of manure-enriched soil and water periodically with warm water. The author says small palatable radishes develop in a few days.

For winter, use a barrel sawn in half: fill one half with good soil and sow seeds, cover with the other half and place in the cellar.

Water daily with warm water. Alternatively use two tubs of equal diameter in place of a barrel.

Historical editorial note: The historically claimed growing time is optimistic and may not reflect actual plant development or modern hygienic indoor growing conditions.
