No. 3599 — Hempseed Oil Clarification for an Icon Lamp

English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 3599 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.

For 8 pounds hempseed oil, add ¼ pound of vitriol and leave for two weeks. The source then adds an equal volume of boiling water, shakes, allows settling, drains and washes a second time.

The author says the resulting oil burns in an icon lamp in the manner of wood oil.

Historical editorial note: This recipe concerns fuel, not edible oil. Vitriol can denote dangerous corrosive or toxic substances; do not use this treatment for food or follow it without qualified chemical-safety expertise.
