No. 3510 — Drink from Cranberries, Barberries, Raspberries or Blackcurrants
English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 3510 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.
Cook ¾ pound cranberries in 4 glasses water with ¼ vershok vanilla. Strain and press out the fruit, then combine with 2 glasses water previously boiled with sugar.
For 6 glasses:
1½ glasses, or ¾ pound, cranberries or other berries | ½–¾ pound sugar; optionally ¼ vershok vanilla. |
Alternatively put 3–4 lumps sugar in each glass, add water and 3–4 tablespoons raw cranberry fruit drink or raspberry, blackcurrant or other berry juice to taste.
A third alternative is to steep any berries in water for 24 hours, then strain and drink with sugar.
Historical editorial note: The source's 24-hour standing of berries in water lacks modern microbial safety controls.
