No. 3493 — Glintwein (Mulled Wine)
English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 3493 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.
Pour 1½ glasses water, 1½ glasses (½ bottle) Médoc wine and 1½ glasses rum into a saucepan.
Add 1½ pounds sugar, 18 cloves, 18 cardamom pods, 1 cinnamon stick and a piece of mace.
The source says to bring to the boil and serve hot after straining into glasses.
A later Russian editorial note identifies Médoc as a wine-producing region of France.
Historical editorial note: Boiling strong alcoholic liquids can create fire hazards; the historic method is not contemporary heating-safety guidance.
Original source: Read Russian recipe No. 3493. Historical quantities and terminology are retained. See the measurements guide. Period preparation and storage methods are not modern safety guidance.
