No. 3488 — Ladies' Punch
English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 3488 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.
For 6 glasses, take ½ bottle very good rum and 1 bottle (3 glasses) boiling water.
Add juice from 1 large lemon after first rubbing its zest into the 1 pound sugar specified for this batch.
The source describes bringing everything to a boil two or three times, cooling and chilling on ice before serving; the author calls it very tasty.
Historical editorial note: Boiling spirits presents fire hazards. This is a historical preparation, not an endorsement of heating alcoholic drinks over open flames.
