No. 3486 — Liqueur for Punch

English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 3486 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.

Take 2 pounds sugar in total. Rub part of it over zest of 5 lemons and 1 orange, then squeeze the juice.

Pour 1 glass boiling water over the remaining sugar, bring to the boil twice and cool. Add the strained lemon and orange juice and the sugar used for rubbing the zest, letting it dissolve fully.

Stir in 1 bottle rum, 2 glasses sherry and 2 glasses of the best French vodka. Strain the mixed liqueur through a napkin folded four times until clear.

Bottle, cork and seal with resin. When punch is wanted, the historical recipe dilutes a portion to taste with hot water or tea.

Historical editorial note: Adding strong alcoholic liquids near heat can create a fire hazard; the historical preparation is not a validated modern safety procedure.
