No. 2644 — White-Bread Toasts with Wine

English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 2644 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.

Slice 1½ bread rolls into pieces about 1½ finger-widths thick, or use 12–18 rusks. Put them into a deep plate and moisten with white wine, repeatedly spooning back the wine that runs off so they become soaked.

Coat with fine sugar, arrange on a baking dish and dry in the oven. To serve, pour over fresh wine and put a little preserve on each piece. Use about 1 glass of wine, ½ glass of sugar and ½–1 glass of preserves or marmalade.
