English historical translation of Molokhovets recipe No. 1613 from the 1901 Russian cookbook, retaining original methods and measures.
Clean one Russian pound, or three glasses, of raspberries, blackcurrants, cherries or blueberries. Boil briefly in three glasses of water, mash and strain.
Add half a glass of granulated sugar or molasses and return the berry syrup to the boil.
Layer slices of French white bread in a stoneware bowl, pouring half a glass of hot berry syrup over each layer. Cover for half an hour and turn onto a dish.
Serve the remaining glass of syrup separately.
